Good Night And Good Luck · 21 November 05

Sharon and I went to see Good Night And Good Luck at the South Lamar Alamo on Saturday the 19th. The movie has a message that needs to be heard right now. The last paragraph of the movie review at RollingStone.com says it best:

“For a paltry $8 million, Clooney has crafted a period piece that speaks potently to a here-and-now when constitutional rights are being threatened in the name of the Patriot Act, and the American media trade in truth for access. ‘We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason,’ said Murrow. Amen to that, brother. Good night, and good luck.”

Speaking of the (amazingly misnamed) PATRIOT Act (Google search | Wikipedia)... It’s supposed to expire at the end of 2005. Can I have my constitutional rights back now, please? Well, There are some who feel that it’s important to keep it around for fear of something worse getting passed later (What an awful basis to stand on. Doesn’t passing one law set precedence for similar ones to follow?). According to NPR’s PATRIOT Act website House and Senate negotiators have struck a tentative agreement to extend the Patriot Act.

Egads.
